13 Spooktacular Days

Over the past two years we have done two special segments on the website which quickly became favorites among the fans. In honor of Walt Disney World's 40th anniversary two years ago we celebrated by debuting 40 Years, 40 Days while last year in honor of Epcot's 30th anniversary we took a look at all things Epcot with our 30 Years, 30 Days segment!

This year to celebrate Halloween we will be taking a look at the Haunted Mansion over the next 13 spooktacular days in a brand new segment known as 13 Spooktacular Days at the Haunted Mansion! Enjoy!

Day 13 - October 31, 2013

We have made it to the graveyard of the Mansion and we still have a few surprises awaiting us on our final stop of our 13 Spooktacular Days!

While there are several guests found throughout the graveyard, today we will be pointing out just a few of them and the stories of how they got there. Starting off with the stars of the graveyard: the Phantom Five, or as most people know them, the singing busts. As urban legend goes, one of the busts features the face of Walt Disney, but this is actually not true. The bust in question actually belongs to Thurl Ravenscroft whose voice can be found throughout Walt Disney World and also as famous characters like Tony the Tiger!

The five busts lead the song, Grim Grinning Ghosts. Grim Grinning Ghosts was written by X. Attencio, who, as discussed earlier in this series, was given the assignment of creating songs for both the Haunted Mansion and Pirates of the Caribbean by Walt himself. X., who had never written a song before, came through and brought a unique quality to the graveyard. While many guests can sing the famous refrain for the song, there are actually four different renditions of the song being sung throughout the graveyard! The busts lead the main verse, but one guest in particular adds a different take on the song.

Just after passing the busts guests will find a scene on their left hand side featuring a few ghosts sitting around a teapot. During the song the woman sitting closest to the hovering teapot will state, "Everybody scream....or sugar" a play on the phrase, "cream or sugar?" While her addition is interesting, the ghost that is sitting slightly behind her deserves an even closer look.

As we have looked at several times over the past 13 days, a sea captain, Captain Gore, was originally going to be the central focus of the storyline inside the Haunted Mansion. Eventually the story was changed, but remnants of the captain can be found scattered throughout the Mansion. Here in the graveyard, however, we can find the Captain himself drinking tea while sitting in a tombstone!

Around the corner from the Captain is a mausoleum which features the face of death itself, the Grim Reaper, standing at the entrance. If you take a look at the Grim Reaper's left hand you will see he is holding onto a hidden Mickey!

We finally pass under our final raven of the attraction and enter the crypt where the Ghost Host advises us to "watch out for hitchhiking ghosts." After this statement we find three ghosts with thumbs out awaiting a ride. While the ghosts don't actually have official names, over the years guests and Cast Members have assigned them the names of Phineas (the one with the bag), Ezra (the tallest of the three), and Gus (the short bearded one).

We then round the corner with the three ghosts where one of them will randomly be sitting in the car with guests! Guests then turn the final corner where they find Little Leota. While Leota Toombs, who we discussed twice already this week, provides the facial movements of Leota in the séance room, she did not perform the voice. Here, however, Leota performs both the voice and provides the physical layout of Little Leota.

I hope you have enjoyed the past thirteen days as we have toured through the Haunted Mansion! As Little Leota points out, I hope you all "Hurry baaaaack."
