13 Spooktacular Days

Over the past two years we have done two special segments on the website which quickly became favorites among the fans. In honor of Walt Disney World's 40th anniversary two years ago we celebrated by debuting 40 Years, 40 Days while last year in honor of Epcot's 30th anniversary we took a look at all things Epcot with our 30 Years, 30 Days segment!

This year to celebrate Halloween we will be taking a look at the Haunted Mansion over the next 13 spooktacular days in a brand new segment known as 13 Spooktacular Days at the Haunted Mansion! Enjoy!

Day 1 - October 19, 2013

Welcome foolish mortals...

The Haunted Mansion has been one of the classic Disney attractions since it first debuted in Disneyland on August 9, 1969.It is crazy thinking that this signature attraction wasn't around when Disneyland first opened 14 years prior, but that doesn't mean the idea of a haunted house styled attraction wasn't on Walt's mind.

Before Walt even considered creating Disneyland he tossed around the idea of having a Mickey Mouse Park built right on the Studio lot. While the park featured staple Disney attractions like a railroad and boat ride, off in the distance was a Haunted House that was awaiting guests on the top of a hill.

When Disneyland began to become a reality, the idea of a Haunted House was still on the mind of Walt and his Imagineers and an idea of placing a Haunted Mansion styled attraction on a street that comes off of Main Street, USA was tossed around. While that never became a reality, a few years after Disneyland opened, the idea of the park expanding was thrown around and with it, the idea of a haunted house was once again brought up.

It was when the construction of New Orleans Square began to take off that talks of a haunted house attraction placed in a southern mansion became a reality. The only problem Imagineers had ahead of them was a simple one. What is the storyline going to be and how would they transport hundreds of guests through without them getting lost or scared.

To find out how they solved this problem, make sure to stop by tomorrow as we continue into our second spooktacular day...
