Discovery Island is the central hub for Disney's Animal Kingdom. All
lands, with the exception of Rafiki's Planet Watch, can be
reached from Discovery Island.
Even though Discovery Island is home to "it's tough to be a
bug," the main attraction here is the Tree of Life itself.
With 325 animals carved into it, and several paths that lead
right up to its roots, a guest could spend hours studying
this wonderful masterpiece.
Before Disney's Animal Kingdom was complete there was a long
debate over what the name of the park's main land would be.
While names were being thrown around, the Imagineers finally
settled on the name Safari Village, which actually stuck.
Eventually, Disney's island in the middle of Bay Lake,
Discovery Island (which was a place for guests to see
animals in the wild), closed in 1999 and the name was
brought over to Disney's Animal Kingdom.
Just like all Disney lands, Discovery Island is rich in
detail. Take some time to explore the shops (which all
revolve around a specific animal or a group of animals),
restrooms (the dung beetle is present throughout the
restrooms near the entrance to Dinoland, USA), and even the
benches (snail statues are present at one to remind you to
take your time like a snail).
The current attractions on Discovery Island are "it's tough
to be a bug" and the Discovery Island Trails. In addition to
these two attractions there are several shops and two
restaurants (Pizzafari and Flame Tree Barbeque).
Fun Facts: At one point Imagineers were
thinking of giving guests the opportunity to ascend to the
top of the Tree of Life. This would have given guests a
great view of Discovery Island and the rest of the park!
Touring Tips: After exiting "it's tough to
be a bug" take a left instead of a right. This will lead you
to some of the quietest trails throughout all of Walt Disney
World. These trails give you some very unique looks at the
Tree of Life and allows you to spend some more quality time
with the animals hidden in this part of the park!
