Fun Find Friday
November 22, 2013
Location: Frontierland, Magic Kingdom
Let's start off this week's Fun Find Friday by
taking a look at the following picture:

Sure the picture is recognizable as being from
Splash Mountain in Frontierland, but have you ever noticed how many
trees there are found throughout the attraction? The amazing thing
is these trees are helping hide one of the most amazing details
found within the attraction. How so? The best way to explain it is
by taking a look at a picture from Pirates of the Caribbean:

So what are we looking at here? While this is the
famous auction scene in Pirates, have you ever taken a look at the
sky here? Black as night. Same thing for attractions like Peter
Pan's Flight, Snow White's Scary Adventure (RIP), Buzz Lightyear's
Space Ranger Spin, and the list goes on! So how do all these night
time scenes and the trees in Splash Mountain connect with one
another?
When Imagineers paint the interior portions of
attractions they usually make it nighttime in the attractions for a
simple, yet obvious, reason. If the paint was brightly colored the
edges of the ceiling would stand out resulting in guests losing the
believability that the sky is a continuation from the walls to the
ceiling. While Splash Mountain could have easily been set in dark
rooms as well, it is pretty obvious that wouldn't be the scene set
for a zip-a-dee-do-dah type of day.
The solution? Keep the bright colors exemplifying
the brightness of the day, but add trees throughout the attraction
to help cover up where the ceilings meet the walls!
