Fun Find Friday

November 27, 2015

Location: Rafiki's Planet Watch, Disney's Animal Kingdom

If you haven't been able to tell over the past several years, I absolutely love the hidden details found throughout Disney parks. We have spent a lot of time taking a look at items that most people walk by without realizing the amazing detail or story they are missing out on, but today we are going to take a look at something that most guests have seen, but don't know the true meaning behind it. I'm talking about this "statue" at the entrance to Rafiki's Planet Watch:

Practically every time you get off the Wildlife Express there is almost a guarantee that several families will be taking pictures of the elephants or their children will be climbing on them. While it may appear to be a great photo opportunity that is not the real purpose of the elephants.

As you may or may not know, at the end of the path guests can have the opportunity to pet various farm animals like goats, pigs, mules, and cows. Naturally, Disney encourages guests to wash their hands after interacting with the animals and they provide a hand washing station at the exit of the petting zoo. Originally, the sinks weren't going to be traditional sinks, but something a lot more creative. If you take a look at the end of the elephant's trunks you can see what their original purpose wa: a hand washing station!
