Sleepy Hollow

Return to Liberty Square Dining

The Menu:

The History: The history of the restaurant actually begins in the 1800's when author of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, Washington Irving, built a house in Tarrytown, New York. Over the years he expanded his home, which he named Sunnyside, and it became a popular destination for his family and friends.

In 1949 Disney released the film, The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad, with half of the film focusing on the story of Ichabod Crane, Washington Irving's hero in The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.  While designing Liberty Square, Imagineers knew they should incorporate some Disney characters into the land, and Ichabod Crane and his home of Sleepy Hollow were an obvious choice.

To give the restaurant a feel of both colonial America and Sleepy Hollow, Imagineers made the Sleepy Hollow restaurant similar to Washington Irving's Sunnyside in New York.

Fun Facts: This isn't the only place in Liberty Square where you can find a reference to Ichabod Crane! Across the street, at Ye Olde Christmas Shoppe, you can see that Ichabod Crane makes the corner home his workplace for music and voice lessons!
